Transit agencies across Canada are investing in new buses to better operations.

BC Transit to invest in light-duty vehicles for Port Alberni Transit System

BC Transit will begin replacing Port Alberni Transit System's five medium-duty buses with newer model light-duty buses. The agency notes the fleet renewal will improve vehicle availability, provide better access to replacement parts and reduce maintenance-related disruptions.

According to BC Transit, the newer model light-duty buses are designed to provide a comfortable and accessible transit experience, offering seating for up to 18 passengers and dedicated spaces for up to two wheelchairs. The buses include a range of features, such as:

• White LED destination signs that clearly display the route name and destination. 

• Modern vinyl seating that is easy to clean and resists dirt and contaminants. 

• Interior lighting designed to increase safety for boarding and exiting passengers. 

• Umo fare payment technology for faster pay options and trip-planning tools. 

• BC Transit’s NextRide system for real-time bus locations and onboard audio stop announcements. 

• Digital screens that display information like upcoming stops, current route and service alerts. 

• Bike racks to accommodate two bikes with tires up to three inches wide during daylight hours. 

• Seatbelts, as well as two built-in child booster seats.

The agency notes all light-duty buses are equipped with three-point seatbelts at every seat. Under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, all passengers are required to wear a seatbelt whenever one is provided while the vehicle is in operation. Additionally, each light-duty bus is equipped with two integrated child seats with five-point harnesses.

St. Albert Transit to invest in diesel buses 

St. Albert Transit has selected Nova Bus to supply 13 40-foot diesel buses. The order is part of St. Albert Transit’s fleet renewal and expansion program, designed to support growing ridership in the Edmonton metropolitan area while providing a solution that combines performance and durability.

The new order builds on the 19 vehicles already delivered, bringing the total number of Nova Bus vehicles integrated into the network since 2025 to 32.
