Lawrence Transit System is expanding its services with the launch of on-demand bus track. The agency's new service helps to make public transit more accessible to the community with a new app to book free evening and overnight trips.

“Lawrence Transit is proud to offer free, on-demand trips during evening and overnight hours,” said Adam Weigel, Lawrence Transit's transit and parking manager. “Between new facilities, new electric buses, an increasing number of improved bus stops and added technology, we are always looking for opportunities to improve our service.”

Lawrence Transit On Demand operates as a shared ride service within the city limits. The agency's on-demand services will give riders a sense of familiarity and comfort when they can expect to see the same bus drivers servicing their usual route. Smaller buses servicing these routes are all ADA accessible and equipped with bike racks. Services are also door-to-door.

Service runs from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday and 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Lawrence Transit On Demand will run on Sundays starting in January 2024, as well as extending Saturday hours from midnight to 6 a.m.

Trips can be scheduled up to five days in advance and reservations can be made by phone.

Lawrence Transit On Demand is supported by Spare Labs. The Kansas Department of Transportation awarded Lawrence Transit with a $124,000 Access, Innovation and Collaboration grant to launch the service.
