Julia M. Carson Transit Center designers AXIS Architecture + Interiors and AECOM were recognized for their work on the downtown Transit Center with an Honor Award in the New Construction (Project cost greater than $1 million) category at the Annual American Institute of Architects Indiana Design Awards Program.
The Honor Award is the highest recognition awarded in the category which represents excellence in design for constructed works of architecture completed within the past five years. AXIS and AECOM partnered with Rundell Ernstberger Associates to create a complementary building and site with an emphasis on transit rider experience.
The project submission narrative describes the project as, “a gateway to downtown (which embodies) IndyGo’s values: dignity-of-ridership and accessibility for all.” The project features several sustainable components, and expects to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Status or higher.
“The Transit Center is an iconic piece of architecture in Indianapolis’ Market East District that brings dignity to our customers and enhances the transit-riding experience. The center also emphasizes our commitment to environmental sustainability,” stated IndyGo President & CEO Mike Terry.
The Transit Center opened to the public on June 26, 2016, featuring amenities such as 19 covered bus bays with Real Time Arrival information, public restrooms, an indoor waiting area, customer service, and free Wifi internet. The Transit Center significantly increases the reliability of Indianapolis bus service and provides operational support with employee facilities.
