A new transit exchange has opened in the city of Abbotsford, B.C., in partnership with the province of British Columbia and BC Transit. Located in the Highstreet area of Mount Lehman Road, bus service to the exchange is expected to begin Sept. 6, 2026, with final construction and landscaping work being completed in coming months.

“By modernizing transit infrastructure at the new Highstreet Exchange we’re providing our customers with a welcoming, accessible and comfortable transit hub that also positions the Abbotsford region for future service growth,” said BC Transit President and CEO Erinn Pinkerton. “Investments like this help strengthen local transit networks, improve the customer experience and support the growing communities we serve across British Columbia.”

BC Transit says the new transit exchange will improve connections for growing neighborhoods in the area and provide residents with improved access to public transit. The new exchange opens with five new bus bays, which will serve both local and regional routes–including the Fraser Valley Express. The exchange will also feature new transit shelters with bench seating, a multi-use pathway on the north side of the road, enhanced street lighting and bike racks. Additional features still under construction include a sixth bus bay, connection of the multi-use pathway to Mount Lehman Road, a washroom building for transit operators, public plaza spaces with additional trees, bench seating and landscaping.

The C$8.1 million (US$5.9 million) project was funded in part thanks to a C$3.2 million (US$2.3 million) investment by the province through BC Transit. The project is part of Abbotsford City Council’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan to create a community that is inclusive and connected through convenient and affordable transportation with vibrant commercial centers.

“Strengthening our transit network is key to linking residents and visitors to the great people and places that Abbotsford offers as the economic and cultural hub of the Fraser Valley,” said Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens. “We are grateful to the province of BC for their investment and partnership.” 

The new exchange builds on other recent transit center projects BC Transit has been working on, including beginning construction on a new Downtown Transit Center and starting site preparation and building demolition work at the site of the future Saanich Transit Center.
