The Rockford Mass Transit District Board of Trustees has announced that effective January 4, 2018, Michael Stubbe is the new executive director for the Rockford Mass Transit District. Stubbe will be replacing Rick McVinnie as executive director who will be stepping down on January 3, 2018. McVinnie, who has served as executive director for 25 of his 42 years with RMTD, will be retiring in 2018. McVinnie will be working as an advisor to Stubbe and the Board to assist with the transition until his upcoming retirement.
Stubbe joins RMTD with over 22 years of public transit experience working in transit operations management, safety and transit planning. He has spent the last 11 years at the Chicago Transit Authority where he recently served as Interim vice president of safety, compliance and risk management and was responsible for the overall management of the CTA’s safety program.
During his tenure at CTA, Stubbe has held positions as director of transit instruction where he was responsible for the transit operations training program for bus and rail operation employees and director of bus operations where he was responsible for the performance and delivery of bus service from two of seven bus garages. Prior to joining the CTA, Stubbe worked for 11 years at the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District where he held positions in bus operations management and planning.
Coming from the CTA, which operates the nation’s second largest public transportation system, Stubbe has a wealth of resources from which to draw upon as RMTD moves forward with transit innovations and technologies. “With his background in Urban Planning combined with his work history, Michael is uniquely qualified to lead the District into the future. Rockford Mass Transit is extremely lucky to have someone with Michael’s credentials join our staff as the Executive Director,” stated RMTD Board of Trustee Chairman Pastor Herbert Johnson. The current RMTD Board expresses their thanks to Gary Marzorati for his leadership during the hiring process, which occurred while he was serving as RMTD Board of Trustee chairman.
Stubbe, his wife, and two children look forward to joining the Rockford community. Stubbe, who grew up in Freeport area, is a 1995 graduate of University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban and Regional Planning. He also holds a certificate in Public Management from the IIT Stuart School of Business Graduate Program in Public Administration.
