FirstGroup Launches Hunt for Finance and Engineering Graduates

Dec. 12, 2016
Transport operator FirstGroup is searching for the next generation of finance and engineering graduates to join its 2017 training programs.

The company, which operates 6,200 buses across the UK and carries 140 million rail passengers per year, has opened up applications for its engineering, finance management and general management graduate programs.

Successful applicants will receive hands-on experience, technical training and mentoring, as part of an action-packed leadership development program.

Samantha Humphries, FirstGroup’s graduate program manager, said: “We work in an exciting, and fast moving, sector and that’s why we’re investing in new talent; to make sure we always benefit from fresh ideas and new perspectives.

“The program is ideal for graduates who want to fast-track themselves towards senior management positions. They will work in a variety of locations, meet thousands of new people, and quickly gain the experience they need to build an exciting career in an ever-moving industry.”

James Frost, who joined the graduate program in 2014 and now manages a team of train drivers, said: “The FirstGroup graduate scheme is an unbelievable two-year journey filled with opportunities and exposure to the industry. We had complete ownership of our experience; something I took full advantage of by completing placements with Network Rail and London Underground.”

Sutopa Paul, a graduate engineer, describes her journey so far: “The initial months involved getting my hands dirty and working with technicians to understand how the systems are managed. I even had the chance to drive a vehicle for two weeks.

“I’m currently managing a team of engineers. I would never have imagined that I’d be in such a responsible role so early in my career.”
