SamTrans Art Contest Winners for 2016 Announced
SamTrans announced the winners of the annual county-wide student art competition Art Takes a Bus Ride at its regular board meeting today. The winning entries were selected by a panel of judges from the San Mateo County Arts Commission.
The artists, who are in first to sixth grade, were asked to illustrate the theme “Safe Routes to Schools,” which came as a result of a partnership between SamTrans and the San Mateo County Office of Education. This is the 12th year that SamTrans has partnered with the San Mateo County Office of Education to sponsor the art contest, which engages students in the classroom and emphasizes arts in the community.
More than 189 submissions were received this year, and 15 schools participated. A panel comprised of members from the San Mateo County Arts Commission chose the winning entrees.
The students, accompanied by their families and teachers, were honored by the Board of Directors before the unveiling of the wrapped Art Bus. All of the winning entries are featured on ad cards inside SamTrans buses and on the outside of SamTrans’ rolling art gallery. The Art Bus will operate in regular SamTrans service for the next year. The winning entries also are posted on the SamTrans website.
The winning artists received a SamTrans Summer Youth Pass, art supplies, a certificate and a framed copy of the bus ad card showcasing their art.
