MicroCAT will help to expand services into “transit desert” areas in Albermarle County, Va., where public transport is scarce.

Albemarle County, Va., and Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) have launched MicroCat, an on-demand transit rideshare service that provides reliable and affordable transportation to residents of Albemarle County.

MicroCAT is a transit option that matches multiple passengers traveling in the same direction into one shared minivan to solve “transit deserts,” or areas where fixed-routes cannot efficiently reach.
The service has begun operations in Pantops and Route 29 North.

The Micro CAT service is an app-based software system that functions similarly to Uber or Lyft. The fleet consists of MicroCAT-branded vehicles and wheelchair-accessible vehicles will be available upon request to ensure accessibility.

The pilot-program will operate fare-free. The service will operate Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
