Starting this fall, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will test an innovative service that has the potential to change the way riders use public transit. A pilot project is planned for Fall 2015 to roll out what they're calling Dynamic Transit Service in selected areas of the county.
What is Dynamic Transit Service?
Here’s an example of how it could work: If someone lives or works just beyond walking distance of a VTA bus or light rail route, or needs slightly earlier or later service, a more dynamic service could close the gap and help connect him or her to work, shopping centers or a major transit station.
Riders will be able to request and pay right from their smartphone, and get that service when and where they need it.
Some of the potential areas where this pilot could be tested are high-density employment centers and areas that are hard to serve with fixed-route transit.
In the heart of Silicon Valley, VTA strives to bring the newest, most innovative ways to get around. The pilot project uses cutting-edge software that can dispatch vehicles and tell riders how soon they’ll arrive or reach the destination.
Planning is underway for this Fall 2015 pilot project, which will allow VTA to evaluate and adapt to the needs of Santa Clara Valley residents whenever and wherever they're going. More details will be available this summer.
