Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) has partnered with Sault Ste. Marie Transit to launch Umo in Ontario, Canada.

Cubic’s cloud-based Umo platform is designed to enhance the way riders experience and pay for public transportation, making it easier and more convenient. With Umo, riders will now have the option to use contactless payments by simply tapping their reloadable Umo smartcard or using the Umo Mobility app on mobile devices to pay for their fare swiftly and securely.

“One of the most anticipated features of the Umo system is the implementation of smart card bus passes, including automatic digital transfers,” said Brent Lamming, director of community services at the corporation of the city of Sault Ste. Marie. “Passengers will enjoy the convenience of purchasing and storing their bus passes digitally. These smart cards, coupled with an intuitive mobile app, will offer a simplified method for accessing transit services, allowing riders to swiftly board buses without the hassle of handling physical tickets.”

Umo's easy-to-deploy contactless payment system will help reduce boarding times and address the diverse needs of transit riders. Umo’s collaboration with Canadian manufacturer TAG Canada integrates mechanical fareboxes for a complete fare payment solution. This allows passengers who prefer to pay with cash to continue doing so while also alleviating the burden of costly farebox maintenance and operation for the transit agency.

“Cubic Transportation Systems is proud of the partnership with Sault Ste. Marie Transit to improve the transit experience through the convenience and flexibility of Umo,” said Matt Newsome, senior vice president and general manager, CTS. “The Umo platform helps enable frictionless, equitable access to transit for all, and we are excited to help bring those benefits to eastern Canada. Whether riders pay their fare with their reloadable smartcard or mobile app, Umo will make paying for public transportation easier.”

Sault Ste. Marie’s collaboration with Umo was made possible thanks to funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and contributions from the government of Canada, the province of Ontario and the corporation of the city of Sault Ste. Marie.
