About 350 people were stuck without air-conditioning on an Amtrak train from Chicago that stopped near a Downstate cornfield Tuesday after having fuel problems, officials said.
Illini train No. 393 to Carbondale stopped about 6 p.m. on the Canadian National tracks about 10 miles south of Gilman, Amtrak officials said. Passenger Eric Lozano said passengers were stuck on the train for at least an hour without air conditioning. Officials said the crew distributed water and snacks to passengers when the air-conditioning failed. There was a fuel issue, but officials could not say if the train ran out of fuel. Passengers reboarded the train about 9:30 p.m. after a three-hour, 30 minute delay. Michael Lansu
