Op-Ed: Integrating video and communications for transit safety
Many of the Western world’s transit systems are still in a period of post-pandemic recovery. Even though the number of passengers hasn’t fully returned to pre-pandemic baselines, the number of security problems is still going up. The U.K. is currently experiencing a spike in violence against women and staff on transport. Data from the Bureau of Transportation shows crime across all modes of transit is growing throughout the U.S., having some metropolitan cities like Los Angeles boost police presence at transit sites to account for it.
Transit hubs are by no means simple places to protect, but more could be done to support the safety of staff, travelers and property. Public transit is a cornerstone of urban development and economic activity, which makes this issue even more pressing. Restoring confidence in transit safety through data integration and physical security is an investment with an enormous societal return.
Video as the security backbone
Historically, CCTV has served two core functions:
- Allowing active security teams to witness events in action.
- Providing evidence for investigations post incident.
Both duties are undermined by legacy devices. The reliance on manual observation means that either security teams sit and man consoles for hours at a time or risk missing threat indicators that could have allowed them to intervene in an incident sooner.
The quality of the captured footage and how it is archived exposes another critical flaw in traditional video systems. Older cameras struggle with low-light conditions and odd angles, producing footage that quickly degrades when zoomed in. Files are several hours long and contain very little metadata, slowing investigations and adding more time-consuming technical work for teams that are already stretched thin.
Modern solutions address these issues with smart analytics and thoughtfully implemented automation. Cameras scan live feeds to detect suspicious objects and detect crowd movements, all without requiring an operator to be physically present. The system can then notify security teams on their handheld devices of the incident location and nature, allowing prompt intervention before escalation.
Footage is automatically tagged and stored for retrieval, meaning these systems streamline the incident pipeline from detection, straight through to investigation. In narrowing the response gap, the time between detection and action, artificial intelligence (AI)-based cameras and analytics restructure transit security, giving teams a data-driven method of proactive intervention that would otherwise demand increased staff counts and workloads.
Communication tools and the benefits of integration
As a term, integration is thrown around quite often, but it holds specific relevance for transit networks that deal with large crowds, distributed spaces and isolated assets. Integration refers to the unification of traditionally siloed systems to create an environment in which radio communications, CCTV and alarms converge on a single dashboard.
Control rooms struggle with unoptimized data. Each time they must switch systems to investigate an alarm or verify a camera feed introduces a point of friction that slows down their ability to coordinate a response.
With integration, each component forms part of a unified ecosystem, seamlessly sharing data to support and enhance communication and decision-making. These combined systems allow operators to:
- Assess incidents and coordinate a response within the same workflow.
- Keep responders and broader security teams on the same page through live updates.
- Prioritize incidents through AI filtering and cross-referencing logs across different systems, reducing false alarms and surfacing genuine threats faster.

Video gives security teams their initial view of a situation, but communication helps them make sense of what they see, which enables them to respond. By bringing these elements together, integration helps turn observations into effective action.
The macro-operational impact of integration
While integration improves the day-to-day workflow for individual control room operators, its true value scales up to the macro level, delivering massive operational and economic benefits to the entire transit network operator.
A powerful example of this occurred during a collaboration between a leading systems integrator, transit police and a Tier-1 urban rail network. By integrating and connecting disparate CCTV systems, authorities were able to dramatically accelerate the incident investigation pipeline. Specifically, when a passenger incident occurred on the tracks, the seamless data flow allowed teams to rapidly verify whether the event was an accident or a potential homicide.
In a massive transit network, that speed changes everything. The roadblocks of integration
Transit networks in the U.K. and the U.S. have been operating for decades, all the while adding new security systems. As a result, legacy systems are hard to integrate, with updates requiring a significant investment of cash and technical expertise.
To address these concerns and to prevent this situation from recurring, modern security systems are modular by design, built with scalability and interoperability in mind. The most pressing issues facing transit security are unlikely to be solved by simply adding new devices to the network. Security teams should instead focus on consolidating what they already have. Integration changes daily workflows, but the benefits of improved situational awareness and unified context more than justify the adjustment period.
Seconds matter in transit incidents. Improved coordination from integration minimizes the time operators waste togging between communication systems and video feeds to establish situational awareness. Neutralizing future threats to transit personnel and passengers requires an integrated approach that prioritizes resilience and adaptability.
