The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is testing new mobile vacs to help keep its tracks cleaner, because trash on the tracks causes fires and fires cause train delays.
Two $320,000-a-piece vacuum prototypes were constructed and tested in recent months as part of a push by the Mayor’s office dubbed “Operation Track Sweep.” With about one month of regular track cleaning, transit officials said the difference is visible.
