Brampton Transit launched the Presto fare card system Monday on the system's more than 265 buses.

Brampton Transit launched the Presto fare card system Monday on the system's more than 265 buses.

Presto allows commuters to travel between multiple transit systems using one card. Users load it with a dollar amount and tap on when boarding a bus or train. The fare is automatically deducted from the card, so riders no longer have to ensure they have exact change, tickets or transfers for buses, GO Trains and the subway in the GTA.

Metrolinx is implementing the program and it is being phased in gradually. It is already being used in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, and at GO stations on the Lakeshore (east and west), Milton, Georgetown, Barrie Stouffville and Richmond Hill lines (excluding Pickering and Brampton stations) and at 12 TTC subway stations.

York's VIVA and Mississauga s MiWay have or will be launching Presto soon.

So far, more than 42,000 commuters are using Presto fare cards in the GTA.
