Face coverings now mandatory for VTA riders

May 5, 2020
The requirement comes as the county health officer includes a mandate for face coverings while using transit in its most recent Shelter-in-Place order.

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) passengers are required to wear face coverings when using the transit system.

A recent announcement from the Santa Clara County Health Officer extends the Shelter-in-Place order through the end of May and includes a mandate for transit personnel and passengers to wear face coverings while riding, which began May 4.

That means anyone boarding VTA vehicles will have to comply by donning a face covering and continue to adhere to social distancing requirements to the greatest extent feasible. Bus and light-rail operators will also be wearing face coverings while in their vehicles.

VTA says it is getting the word out through posters, recorded messaging onboard vehicles and platforms, and other public messaging to remind passengers about this new requirement. In some municipalities, such as Cupertino, face covering orders have already been issued so the new county order will bring consistency to all locations served by VTA.
