Charlotte Area Transit System will join Operation Lifesaver, UNC Charlotte, the city of Charlotte and rail systems across the country in celebrating Rail Safety Week Sept. 23-29.

The goal of Rail Safety Week is to raise awareness across the U.S. of the need for rail safety education. CATS and UNC Charlotte aim to utilize this campaign to empower citizens to stay safe near the LYNX Blue Line, CityLYNX Gold Line and other rail tracks.

CATS will commemorate the week through a series of educational blitzes on UNC Charlotte’s campus, a social media awareness campaign and encouraging Charlotte to #GoGreenforRailSafety. The city, CATS, and UNC Charlotte are asking the Charlotte community to wear green on Wednesday, Sept. 26, to show support for safe practices around rail tracks.

“With the addition of 9.3 miles of rail in Charlotte out to the university, many more people are interacting with tracks on a daily basis,” said CATS CEO John Lewis. “Staying safe around tracks, trains and stations should be a priority for all citizens.”
