Tickets Still Available for MLK Jr. Celebration Train

Jan. 13, 2016

Caltrain will operate a Celebration Train on Jan. 18, to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and tickets for the special service are still available.

The Celebration Train is a free service, but all passengers must register in advance for a commemorative ticket, which can be done here. A limited number of tickets remain for the event.

The Celebration Train will depart from the San Jose Diridon Caltrain Station at 9:45 a.m. It will make stops in Palo Alto at 10:05 a.m. and San Mateo at 10:22 a.m. before arriving in San Francisco by 10:55 a.m. There is no special southbound service, but Celebration Train tickets will be accepted on southbound trains departing San Francisco after 1 p.m. that day.

For more than 30 years, Caltrain coordinated with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley to operate a special Freedom Train on MLK Jr. Day. In an effort led by King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, Freedom Trains operated in areas across the country, as a way to commemorate the historic 54-mile march from Montgomery to Selma, Alabama that King and other civil rights’ pioneers embarked upon in 1965.

The 2014  it was the final journey of Caltrain’s Freedom Train, but the rail agency is continuing to honor the late civil rights icon by partnering with the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation (NorCalMLK) for the Celebration Train.

The Celebration Train will feature the theme The Reality of the Dream, and will focus on the progress made with the civil rights movement, while examining the present reality and the commitment to a brighter future.
