Metrolinx continues to build and expand along the Lakeshore East Line to improve journey times as work continues to ramp up in support of building electrification infrastructure to bring quieter, faster and more efficient service.
This means customers will be able to take the train throughout the day without checking schedules, knowing the next one is on its way shortly.
Union Station Rail Corridor East
Union Station is the nation’s most important passenger rail hub. It would normally serve about 350,000 people each day. Work continues at the station to support increased GO service to four times the number of trains across the network per day.
To better serve customers, in the past year, Metrolinx has opened the new Union Station Bus Terminal and reopened Union Station’s Bay Concourse after an extensive revitalization.
Other projects in this vital corridor include widening of platform 24/25, construction of a new south platform, signaling system upgrades, structural bridge rehabilitation and signal tower renewal.
East Harbour
The new East Harbour GO Station is being developed to support local transit needs and vital connections for customers.
Anticipated to be a major transit hub, this interchange station on the Lakeshore East GO Line will provide seamless connectivity to more GO services, including the SmartTrack stations program, more GO services and local transit, as well as the Ontario Line.
This new GO station will be in the Riverdale neighborhood, immediately east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, on the Lakeshore East GO Line.
Toronto Lakeshore East Rail Corridor
Work has started on retaining walls that will be built between Jones Avenue and Coxwell Avenue as well as Woodbine Avenue to Warden Avenue.
As part of the preparation for the walls, crews need to create level ground through grading. Grading consists of moving earth and ground that will allow crews to build a temporary road for efficient access to the tracks.
Retaining walls hold back the earth securely from grading in order to expand the corridor, which is the large section of rail line. These walls will also support the weight of passenger and freight trains.
The expansion project will enable the future addition of a fourth track and electrification on the Lakeshore East Line.
The improvements to the infrastructure today will help bring communities even more service in the years to come.
Bowmanville
Working in partnership with Canadian Pacific (CP) freight, Metrolinx has advanced the Bowmanville Expansion business case through to the next step in the process, the Preliminary Design Business Case (PDBC) for further analysis and required approvals.
The Bowmanville PDBC further examines the alignment identified in the Initial Business Case (IBC), while examining two different weekend service options.
The alignment recommends one new track plus sidings and passing tracks, where necessary, through Oshawa GO Station connecting to CP’s GM spur line to cross Highway 401, making an eventual connection through CP’s Belleville Subdivision to Bowmanville.
Expanding GO train service in Durham builds upon planning work and service and infrastructure improvements that are already underway in the region.
The Lakeshore East Line currently offers two-way, all-day service with 15-minute or better frequencies between Union Station and Oshawa. With plans to bring quieter and faster service, more improvements are on the way to help create a convenient regional rapid transit system.
