Universal accessibility: STM’s Outremont Station under construction beginning this November

Oct. 13, 2020
The agency will have to completely close the station from January 2022 to August 2022 since the station only has one entrance building.

The Société de transport de Montréal’s (STM) Outremont Station will undergo major repairs beginning November 2020, in addition to installing three elevators to make it universally accessible.

More specifically, the work carried out will consist of:

  • Replacing the waterproofing membrane that covers the underground roof of the station;
  • Redoing the structural slab;
  • Adding a natural ventilation shaft on the roof of the entrance building;
  • Upgrading electrical equipment;
  • Replacing the roof of the station;
  • Replacing the exterior cladding, windows, floor finishes and lighting;
  • Installing new signage; and
  • Restoring the artwork.

Carried out at a cost of C$53 million (US$40.35 million), the project will continue through December 2023. However, to carry out work of this magnitude, the STM will have to completely close the Outremont station between January 2022 and August 2022. As this station has only one entrance building, it would have been impossible to accomplish the major structural work planned, while continuing to welcome customers in complete safety. In addition, this closure will allow certain work to be carried out more quickly. Appropriate mitigation measures will be put in place and communicated to customers in a timely manner.

The project will be the subject of a virtual information event Oct. 26.

Universal accessibility projects

STM's objective is to reach 41 universally accessible stations by 2025. Currently, 16 stations are equipped with elevators. Work is underway in 13 other stations: Angrignon, Jolicoeur, McGill, Place-des-Arts, Berri-UQAM (green line), Préfontaine, Viau, Vendôme, Villa-Maria, Mont-Royal, Édouard-Montpetit, Pie- IX and D'Iberville.
