Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson will be joined by Edmonton Oilers Captain Andrew Ference to proclaim June 4 as Clean Air Day in Edmonton. The proclamation takes place in front of City Hall at 9 a.m.
“Edmonton’s air quality is so important, especially as the city grows,” Iveson said. “By providing alternative transportation options, like adding bike routes, expanding LRT, and making the city more walkable, we can reduce traffic congestion, enhance the city’s livability and contribute to better air quality.”
Poor air quality can negatively impact the health of many Canadians, particularly children and those with compromised immune systems.
The city of Edmonton puts a priority on maintaining Edmonton’s air quality and works with regional partners to develop programs designed to manage emissions in the region. One of these programs is the Be Idle Free campaign, which informs citizens of the city’s idle control bylaw and reminds them of the harms of unnecessary idling.
By adopting more sustainable and healthier lifestyles, we can all contribute to improving our air quality. Edmontonians can celebrate Clean Air Day on June 4 by:
- Considering other modes of transportation such as public transit, carpooling, walking or biking instead of driving
- Avoiding idling; turn off your car’s engine while waiting and avoid drive-thru lines
- Checking tire pressure, as properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency
- Purchasing high efficiency appliances and lighting
- Limiting wood-burning fires
- Using hand-powered garden tools such as push lawnmowers
