In celebration of Dump the Pump Day, City of Laredo, Texas, officials and El Metro Transit introduced a new diesel-hybrid bus.
By introducing this new transportation line, the city says it will be enhancing its sustainability goals, increasing safety, generating greater fuel savings, and lowering operating and maintenance costs. The Diesel-Hybrid bus began service June 21.
“The introduction of our first diesel-hybrid bus is a transformative steppingstone for the city of Laredo,” said Claudia San Miguel, El Metro Transit general manager. “This environmental-friendly bus is a prime example of the commitment of the transit system to not only provide a safe and reliable service, but one that protects the environmental sustainability of our great city.”
As an incentive for the community to use public transportation, all fares will be waived for anyone riding El Metro Transit on June 27. All riders will have an opportunity to enter a raffle to win several prizes. In addition, the city and Webb County are building initiatives for the community to learn which routes they can take to go to work through public transportation, raise awareness of free wi-fi on buses and more.
Aside from riding public transportation, the community was also encouraged to observe Dump the Pump Day by riding a bicycle, carpool with friends and family and plan other trips by using a sustainable transportation system.
The city of Laredo says it was proud to proclaim June 17 as Dump the Pump Day. The proclamation was signed by Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz.
The proclamation and unveiling ceremony for the new bus took place at City Hall Council Chambers on June 17. Throughout the event, city officials expressed the importance of conserving fuel resources and prevention of environmental pollution.
Dump the Pump Day began in 2006 through efforts of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) to encourage commuters to use public transportation in order to save money, help the environment and improve quality of life.
Additionally, the city says this day is a celebration of efficiency and the future. It is also dedicated to spread awareness of depleting fossil fuel resources due to factors such as population growth, urbanization and globalization.
