In a first step toward having an emissions-free public transportation system, city officials are planning to begin transitioning the Santa Maria Area Transit to an all-electric fleet.

With proposed state regulations that would mandate cities begin adding electric vehicles to their public transportation fleets by 2023 and only purchase zero-emission vehicles by 2040, Santa Maria applied in March for a state grant to cover the cost of building out the infrastructure needed to maintain and operate an all-electric fleet of buses.
