L.A. Metro to Celebrate Bike Month with Host of Activities to Introduce More Angelenos to the Benefits of Two-Wheeled Transportation

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is celebrating Bike Month, a nationally celebrated campaign to showcase the benefits of bicycling for transportation, fitness and fun.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is celebrating Bike Month, a nationally celebrated campaign to showcase the benefits of bicycling for transportation, fitness and fun, and will host numerous bike-related activities throughout the month of May.

Metro and its partners will sponsor group rides, bicycle safety workshops and community-hosted events to encourage more L.A. County residents to pursue a healthier, more environmentally sustainable alternative to driving for one or more of their daily trips.

Key Bike Month initiatives and events include:

  • All Month – Metro Bike Share will offer special discounts for those enrolling in a 30-day pass on metro.net/bikeshare. Use the promo code MOREBIKES2019 at checkout to get 30 days of bike share for $1.
  • All Month – Metro is offering discounts for those who sign up this month to use Metro’s four Bike Hubs, which offer free, secured parking and bike maintenance facilities are located at Union Station, Hollywood and Vine, Culver City and El Monte Station. During Bike Month, riders can get 20 percent off on a year pass and a 30-day pass for just $1.
  • Saturday, May 4 – Free Bike Class: Bike 1 – Back to Basics in Palmdale.
  • Sunday, May 5 – Free Group Bike Ride: Sunday Funday Along the L.A. River from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting at the Metro Gold Line Lincoln/Cypress Station.
  • MAY 6, 8 and 9: Three community meetings are being held to look at potential routes for the L.A. River Path Project, which aims to fill the eight-mile gap in the river path between Elysian Valley and Maywood.
  • Thursday, May 9 – Free Bike Class: Bicycling 101 in Reseda from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 11 – Free Bike Ride: Cyclofemme LA – Downtown LA Tour de Murals from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting at the Metro Bike Hub at Union Station.
  • Saturday, May 11 – Free Bike Ride: Bike Month Santa Clarita Trail Ride from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting at Valencia Heritage Park.  
  • Monday, May 13 – Free Bike Class: Bike 1 – Back to Basics + Repair Clinic in East Hollywood from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 14 – Blessing of the Bicycles, 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital. Annual event to promote bicycling and safety. 
  • Thursday, May 16 – Bike to Work Day. Metro and seven other transit agencies will offer free rides on public transit.  Those who board with a bicycle or bicycle helmet on all Metro buses and trains will be allowed to ride free
  • Thursday, May 16 – Metro will also co-sponsor dozens of bicycle pit stops with refreshments and giveaways countywide. Metro will host its own pit stop at the Metro Bike Hub at Union Station. 
  • Saturday, May 18 – Free Bike Class: Street Skills Ride in South Los Angeles from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. 
  • Sunday, May 19 – Metro Presents: 626 Golden Streets: Mission to Mission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Open Streets event will travel through South Pasadena, Alhambra and San Gabriel.  

Metro plays a critical role in supporting bicycling in Los Angeles County. Since 1993, the agency has funded hundreds of millions of dollars in bicycle projects.  Metro’s Active Transportation Program is now helping fill the gaps in the county’s bicycle infrastructure.
