QC: STM to Replace Farecard Readers

It may soon be faster to get onto a bus, as the Société de transport de Montréal will be replacing all of its decade-old fare-card readers starting next year.

The Société de transport de Montréal will be replacing all of its decade-old fare-card readers starting next year.

However, it’s unclear if the new card readers will allow payment by credit card or smartphone.

A $16.6-million project to purchase 2,483 new card readers was part of the STM’s 10-year capital budget. 

The new readers will also be installed at the back of articulated buses to allow the larger buses to be boarded from two different doors, which could further speed up the boarding process.
