Kevin Desmond, CEO of TransLink released the following statement in regards to Compass-related information;

“TransLink welcomes the opportunity to work with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner to ensure that we have the confidence of our Compass users that their personal information is being handled appropriately.

“It’s our practice that Compass-related information isn’t released to law enforcement unless police have the lawful authority to obtain that information for either criminal investigations or urgent circumstances involving the immediate health and safety of the public.

“We completed a Privacy Impact Assessment for the Compass Card program that was reviewed by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner prior to the launch of the program in 2015. A great deal of effort and expertise was applied to the assessment to ensure we protect personal information as required by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

“While the Compass system has only been fully in place since last year, we feel this is a good opportunity for TransLink to review its policy and procedures.

“We take the privacy of our customers’ personal information seriously and if there are ways we can make improvements we will do what’s necessary to reassure customers that their information is carefully protected."
