A new passenger boarding platform was completed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) at the Clinton Railroad Station on Shore Line East (SLE), which more than doubles train service at the station.
Trains are scheduled to begin utilizing the new platform on Monday, April 4, 2022.
“Completing this major capital project increases safety, accessibility and convenience for riders at Clinton Station and along Shore Line East,” said CTDOT Commissioner Joseph Giulietti. “The addition of more trains running through Clinton Station is welcoming news for riders commuting to work, shopping and traveling for pleasure.”
The completion of the Track 1 platform means SLE customers will have more travel options between Clinton Station and New Haven or New London daily, along with convenient connections to the New Haven Line operated by Metro-North Railroad. Weekday train service to and from Clinton Station is increasing from 11 trains to 23 trains, and weekend train service from seven trains to 16 trains.
The newly completed high-level platform on the Track 1 side of the Clinton Station compliments the existing boarding platform. A new covered pedestrian bridge connects both platforms, allowing riders to park or be dropped off on either side of the tracks. The project also includes Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades, including dual elevators. The completed station also provides the infrastructure needed to provide transit-oriented development (TOD) in downtown Clinton.
Additional amenities include covered platform seating, convenience outlets for device charging, covered bike parking, Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations and blue light security phones. With these enhancements, the station now also offers 141 free parking spaces.
“This project is just another example of our commitment to increasing accessibility and convenience for all riders,” added Commissioner Giulietti. “Additional amenities and train service will encourage frequent commuters and new riders alike to consider Connecticut’s rail services as a safe, sustainable way to travel across our state.”
