Elevators at the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration's (MDOT MTA) Mondawmin Metro Subway station will be replaced.
The $4.8-million upgrade of Mondawmin’s elevators represents the agency’s ongoing commitment to preserve and enhance transit infrastructure and the transit experience itself by ensuring safe, dependable service throughout every aspect of the customer’s interaction with MDOT MTA facilities. The construction period is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2022, through spring 2023.
“Our focus at Mondawmin Station is on prioritizing passenger convenience,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Holly Arnold. “New, more welcoming and more reliable elevators are just one aspect of our determination to bring our riders a transit system that is recognized as safe, modern, reliable – and just as important, equitable for all our riders.”
As a major transit hub for the MDOT MTA system, Mondawmin Station serves a wide range of riders. The new elevators, with their capacity to more reliably handle bicycles, strollers, scooters and the entire range of ADA requirements, have long been recognized within the agency as an important element in delivering a quality transit experience.
During the construction period, elevators that carry passengers from the street to the mezzanine level and then to the platform will remain closed. Station escalators will remain operational, however. Riders needing elevator access can use either the West Cold Spring Metro SubwayLink station and connect with LocalLink 82 to Mondawmin with service operating every 30 – 50 minutes, or the Penn-North Metro SubwayLink station connecting with either the LocalLink 85 or the CityLink Lime to Mondawmin with service operating every 15 – 30 minutes.
