Hundreds of thousands of workers, residents and tourists who use the World Trade Center Transportation Hub each day will be able to enter the sprawling facility on street level for the first time beginning August 16 – another major milestone for the world-class transportation facility.

The opening of Hub entrances on Greenwich and Church streets will occur at noon on August 16 simultaneously with the grand opening of Westfield’s shopping complex.  The opening of the northern section of the street-level Hub plaza also will provide enhanced circulation throughout the area.

To mark the milestone, members of the Port Authority Police Department Honor Guard  will conduct a flag raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the northeast corner of the Hub plaza.  Media interested in covering the ceremony should arrive at the location no later than 11 a.m.

The opening of the Hub’s street-level entrances brings the facility closer to completion.  Work is continuing on the construction of Platforms C and D in the World Trade Center PATH Station. The platforms are scheduled to be completed and opened for PATH service in the coming weeks.

The Transportation Hub Oculus opened on March 3, providing an enhanced travel experience for the 50,000 daily PATH riders with below-ground, climate-controlled access to an entrance at the corner of Liberty and Church streets, a few blocks from Wall Street.

On May 26, the Oculus’ eastern portion opened, providing PATH riders with direct connections to nine New York City subway lines – 2,3,4, 5, A, C, J, Z, and R.  Links to the E and No. 1 subway lines will be available in the coming months.

The Transportation Hub and Oculus – designed by Santiago Calatrava – will serve as a 21st century, state-of-the-art transit center and will represent the most integrated network of underground pedestrian connections to mass transit lines in New York City.
