On March 21, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will begin the installation of two new entrance escalators at Deanwood Station as part of a capital project that will provide more reliable escalator service for customers.

Metro's contractor, KONE, will replace the escalators one at a time, leaving the second unit available as a "walker" (stairs) for entry and exit to the station. In addition, the elevator will remain available during the project.

The two escalators were originally installed in 1978 and were last rehabilitated in 2001.

Since 2011, Metro has installed 39 new escalators at the following stations: Bethesda, Branch Avenue, Brookland, Columbia Heights, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, Friendship Heights, Georgia Ave-Petworth, Glenmont, Metro Center, Mt. Vernon Square, Pentagon, Van Ness and Woodley Park. An additional 20 new escalators are scheduled to be installed this year.
