Nov. 7, 2023
The upgraded shelters will include a lower roof to maximize shade , perforated panels to protect against both hot and cold weather elements, two security cameras and safety lighting with dimming features.

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CapMetro) has begun installing the first two out of 80 Rapid shelters for the Expo Center and Pleasant Valley lines. The shelters, which were built in coordination with Kansas-based Dimensional Innovations and Austin-based Stealth Power, are being installed along both lines, though the first two being installed will serve the Expo Center Line.

The upgraded shelters will include:

  • A lower roof to maximize shade
  • Perforated panels to protect against both hot and cold weather elements
  • Two security cameras
  • Real-time bus information
  • A bench made of sustainable materials
  • Safety lighting with dimming features

In addition, dozens of shelters will have solar panels on their roofs from Stealth Power, which will help power each structure more sustainably.

The Expo Center and Pleasant Valley Lines are part of Project Connect, a monumental transportation expansion plan approved by voters in 2020. The Pleasant Valley line will run from the Mueller Neighborhood south to Goodnight Ranch while the Expo Center line will run from the Travis County Expo Center southwest to Republic Square in downtown Austin, Texas. The two lines are expected to be operational in 2025.
