Innovating to Take on What’s Next
In our increasingly connected world, it’s no longer enough to get passengers and packages from Point A to Point B safely and efficiently. Today, railway operators and their passengers expect a seamless experience. Every aspect of rail needs to work towards providing passengers with a better, more enjoyable ride. No matter what.
As critical parts of the nervous system of modern rail, our durable, high-performance interconnect solutions help make that possible.
For more than 60 years, ITT Veam has sat squarely at the intersection of connectivity, rugged durability and quality engineering. We’ve enhanced the capabilities of our trusted interconnect solutions to meet rising market demands for high-speed data transfer technology and create a more modern transit experience. Our plating solutions provide eco-friendly and high-performance connectivity for the long haul — even in the most demanding environments. And through it all, we’ve remained committed to supporting the rail market with customized interconnect solutions. As a result, we’re perfectly positioned to tackle our customers’ toughest applications today — and prepare for what’s coming tomorrow.
ITT Veam will showcase our innovative vision for the future of rail at InnoTrans 2018 — the world’s largest international trade fair for transport technology — with highly engineered high-power and high-speed data interconnect technologies, ruggedized, harsh environment platings and more. Here’s a preview of what you can expect to see at the fair:
Powering a Big Step Forward with Ethernet Capability
Data processing needs have exploded in recent years due to the proliferation of new sensors, on-board processing and other electronic systems that have flooded the rail transportation industry. New components and systems are now exceeding what traditional WTB/MVB systems can provide. And as passenger data needs continue to grow due to smart device usage, this shortcoming will only become more apparent.
In response, leading global train manufacturers have started looking for ways to supplement legacy systems with high-bandwidth Ethernet technology.
That’s where we come in. ITT Veam CIR M12 Data Connectors are built to bridge the gap between current data processing capabilities and customer demand. They have the ability to transfer data from Ethernet, WTB and MVB in a single connector. An important component of the latest generation of Italy’s high-speed trains, ITT Veam CIR M12 Data Connectors can support an industry-leading 10 Gigabit-per-second Ethernet (up to Class FA ISO/IEC 11801 channel performance). They were developed specifically for rail vehicle-to-vehicle interconnection. As a result, they’re helping manufacturers build fault-tolerant, future-proof Ethernet networks that adhere to the unique topology of the train and perform under even the most severe conditions.
Developing Next-Level Environmental Resilience
Pounding hail. Roaring winds. Penetrating heat. Blinding sheets of snow.
Harsh conditions have been part of rail travel since its inception, and they aren’t going away any time soon. With passenger expectations on the rise, you can’t afford components that don’t stand up to the elements. To take on the most challenging environmental conditions in rail, you need heavy-duty solutions that can push the limits of performance day after day.
One example: ITT Veam Power Plate Connectors. They are a fully-customizable, multi-pole, high-power interconnection system that’s ideal for applications such as bogies, traction motors, energy storage and converters. They pack a lot of performance into a compact package while offering an operating voltage of 1200V. But none of that would mean anything if they didn’t also meet the latest smoke and fire rail standards and deliver superior salt spray resistance.
All aluminum-based ITT connectors are available with ITT Blue Generation Plating®. While these connectors already meet the mechanical, electrical, fire, smoke and toxicity requirements of the global rail market, ITT Veam Blue Generation Plating® enhances durability for extreme performance. A combination of zinc, nickel and chrome III, this plating option delivers salt spray resistance of 500 hours while offering best-in-class conductivity and shielding. What’s more, it’s capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -55°C to +125°C.
Connecting to the Future Through Collaboration
If there’s one thing we’ve learned in our decades of experience in the rail industry, it’s that everything is connected. That’s why we make deep collaboration with top minds in rail a priority. All ITT Veam connectors are developed in accordance with the demanding requirements of the rail industry through active participation in standardization bodies and close teamwork with industry experts.
It’s this type of collaboration that has helped us exceed industry standards and develop numerous innovations that connect you to reliability and durability — while connecting passengers with their destinations safely and on time.
And when our customers need something special? We modify our solutions to fit their unique needs or work directly with them to create a highly reliable, cost-effective design. Because at the end of the day, the best connector is the one that fits your exact needs.
That’s how we’re creating the future of rail — by seizing the many big and small opportunities you get each day to make things work better and better.
