Keolis Commuter Services, the MBTA’s operating partner for commuter rail, has awarded $25,000 to local students as part of its Keolis Scholars program. Twenty-five students from Boston, Brockton, Lawrence, Lynn and Worcester will use the $1,000 gift to help pay for post-secondary education or job training. This is the third year Keolis has awarded scholarships, bringing the total amount distributed to $75,000 to 75 students.
Speakers at the award ceremony included Keolis General Manager and CEO David Scorey and local elected officials. Keolis Scholars were provided with commuter rail tickets for them and their families to travel in to Boston and enjoy the awards luncheon at the UMass Club.
“At Keolis we strive to form true partnerships with the communities we serve with safe and reliable commuter rail service,” said Scorey. “Keolis Scholars is one of our favorite programs because by supporting such accomplished students, we know they in turn will go on to support their families, communities and the greater Boston region with their hard work and civic initiative.”
KCS worked with city and school districts to choose the recipients and distribute the awards, which were based on both merit and financial need. More than 60 percent of Keolis Scholars are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). All 25 scholars will be attending programs, colleges and universities in the New England region.
