The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Police Department hosted the tenth year of its popular Kids in Transit program June 4-8 as part of its ongoing community outreach effort.
The MARTA Police Department started the Kids in Transit program in 2008 to positively connect with at-risk youth and teach them how to navigate the transit system. It is a free program for youth and is funded through corporate sponsorships and donations from MARTA employees.
“One of the primary goals of the program is to teach young people how to successfully navigate the system,” said MARTA Police Chief Wanda Y. Dunham. “Additionally, they learn the importance of teamwork, community service, and how to work and live in a multi-cultural environment.”
During the one-week summer series for kids ages 12 to 15, MARTA police officers teach young people transit etiquette, the proper way to use MARTA, safety awareness, and the variety of places they can visit in Atlanta while using the transit system. Kids also participate in community service projects, tour MARTA facilities, and take educational field trips throughout the city.
