Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) is advising Red Line customers that the Rhode Island Avenue Station will remain closed at least through the end of the day Friday, September 2 to allow for additional inspections following two incidents of falling concrete and a metal bracket.
Customers traveling to or from Rhode Island Avenue should allow additional travel time or seek alternate transportation options. Red Line trains will bypass the station and free shuttle bus service will be provided between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations.
Based on preliminary findings, the two incidents do not appear to be related to any structural deficiencies. However, Metro has ordered a top-to-bottom inspection by a third party expert to ensure the structure is sound and does not present a hazard to the riding public.
Earlier, station personnel reported small pieces of concrete falling from the station ceiling. It was the second report in two days. On Wednesday, a metal bracket and small pieces of concrete fell in a different area about 20 feet away. Repairs were made overnight and Red Line service was restored Thursday morning.
