Photographer Peter Steinhauer visited several Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority stations, using his camera to capture the unique architecture and design of the Metrorail system. He focused on capturing the structure of the Metrorail, saying that it is one of the more unique systems that he has been in.

Construction of the Metrorail system began in 1969. Four area bus systems were acquired in 1973. The first phase of Metrorail began operation in 1976. The newest leg of the rail network opened on July 26, 2014. Today, there are 91 Metro stations in service within a 118 mile network.

Many of the stations were designed by architect Harry Weese in the 1960s. His work in Metro helped Weese excel his career as a rail system designer. Wesse was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1961 and received the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1964.

Steinhauer is an artist photographer who focuses on architecture within urban landscape, natural landscape, Asian faces and man made structure.
