Final AZUR train commissioned into STM’s fleet

The Alstom-made railcar marks the closes out the entire 71-car order that dates back to 2010.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has commissioned the last of the AZUR trains received from the Alstom factory in La Pocatière.

STM signed an order for 54 AZUR trains from a Bombardier-Alstom consortium in 2010 and later added 17 AZUR trains in 2018. This railcar commissioned is the final unit of the order for 17 additional trains. In total, 71 AZUR trains are now a part of the rolling stock of the STM, running on the Green and Orange lines. The rest of the fleet is composed of 360 MR-73 train cars.

“After over a decade of incredibly hard work here, the commissioning of this final AZUR train is particularly important—historic, even,” says Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM Board of Directors. “Today, our customers will be the first ones to benefit from the project, having more trains that are modern, high-tech and more comfortable, with 8% more space and improved ventilation.”

“We are extremely privileged to partner with the STM, an organization with a clear vision of what mobility in Montreal should and can be,” adds Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas. “It is with great pride and the shared purpose of putting the passenger first that we are part of the development of sustainable mobility in Montréal and at the heart of the STM’s projects, from the very first métro car to travel on the STM network over 50 years ago, the development of the integrated control center, to now, the latest generation of AZUR trains.”

“This marks the end of an STM flagship project, and we are rightfully proud to have completed it,” said Luc Tremblay, CEO of STM. “It is no wonder that the project office, created in 2006, won a prestigious project management award for orchestrating all the phases involved in integrating these new métro cars. Today, it is our customers’ turn to enjoy the benefits of the 71 new trains now in service.”
