Keolis Commuter Services, the MBTA’s commuter rail operating partner, is preparing for winter weather expected to arrive Wednesday by deploying additional resources, including approximately 350 personnel, equipment, sand and salt.

According to recent weather forecasts, communities along the commuter rail are expected to experience anywhere from 1 - 8 inches of snow, sleet and/or rain, with areas north and west of Boston receiving the highest levels of snow accumulation. Snow and rain in some areas is expected to extend into the evening commute on Wednesday. Icing is expected in certain areas as temperatures drop below freezing, and this can create slippery conditions on rails and station platforms and can also lead to fallen tree limbs.

Teams have been preparing for this weather over the last several days, and crews will be pre-positioned before, during and after the storm to regularly inspect key infrastructure, clear downed branches and help ensure platforms are clear.

“We are monitoring the storm and taking necessary steps to ensure safe conditions for our passengers and normal operation for Wednesday’s commuter rail,” said David Scorey, general manager and CEO of Keolis. “Passengers should use caution when traveling and our customer service team will provide updates on Twitter, via T-Alerts and at stations.”
