Maryland Department of Transportation’s MTA Begins New Round of BaltimoreLink Public Workshops

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will hold 20 public workshops in the next three months to release the revised BaltimoreLink transit improvement plan to the public and gather additional feedback to further refine the plan as the MTA approaches the June 2017 launch of CityLink and LocalLink.

CityLink are bus routes that will be color-coded, run 24 hours, offer frequent daytime service and connect Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink, MARC Train, Commuter Bus, Amtrak and other services into one integrated network. LocalLink are local buses that will provide crosstown connections and fill in the gaps between larger roadways to provide full system access and connectively to neighborhoods and communities.

When Governor Larry Hogan first announced BaltimoreLink in October 2015, the MTA launched a robust outreach program to educate the public about the plan and get feedback. Outreach efforts included public workshops, pop-up events and scheduled meetings with community associations, elected officials and other stakeholders. To date, MTA has held 64 briefings on BaltimoreLink since last fall. Comments on BaltimoreLink also were collected online via SurveyMonkey and the mySidewalk crowdsourcing website. As a result, the MTA received a wealth of constructive and critical feedback that led to revisions in BaltimoreLink’s network design and service levels.

“Through our public outreach process, we received a wealth of information and invaluable ideas on how to make this transformative plan even better for our customers,” said MTA Administrator and CEO Paul Comfort. “Our customers spoke and we listened. And, we solicit more of their input as we move forward with this next round of BaltimoreLink public workshops to further refine our transit improvement plan.”

To achieve MTA’s goal of providing safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service, BaltimoreLink will:

  • improve service quality and reliability;
  • maximize access to high-frequency transit;
  • strengthen connections between MTA’s bus and rail routes;
  • align the network with existing and emerging job centers; and
  • engage riders, employees, communities and elected officials in the planning process.

“The improved plan will allow us to deliver a service that better links people to jobs and to life’s opportunities,” said Kevin Quinn, MTA’s director of planning and programming. “Public input is vital to delivering quality products to users of our transit network.”

The public is encouraged to visit any BaltimoreLink workshop during the times and locations listed below. Each workshop will enable attendees to hear a formal BaltimoreLink presentation, view route information and information boards, discuss the transit plan with team members and provide feedback.
