MBTA Statement on the Selection of Exterior Designs for New Subway Cars

Nov. 13, 2015

The MBTA issued the following statement Nov. 12, regarding the final tally on voting for the exterior design of new subway cars:

After analyzing the survey results and disallowing dubious votes, the MBTA has identified the exterior car designs that were selected by a majority of people who responded to the on-line survey.  Below are the images which received the most votes in each category: Red Line (9,253), Orange Line (10,545), and Green Line (13,001). More than 25,000 votes were counted in each category.

In order to get a more accurate measurement of voters' opinions, the MBTA removed all responses seemingly generated by a computer program.  Because each of these responses were recorded in less than ten seconds, the MBTA deemed the votes invalid and subsequently nullified the unreliable data.  The MBTA regrets the confusion created by the previously announced results, and takes full responsibility for failing to properly monitor the survey responses.  This will not happen again.  The MBTA thanks the thousands of people who had a genuine interest in helping the MBTA select a new look for its new subway and trolley cars.
