Metra has issued a construction scheduled for midday service on the Metra Electric District for a major track maintenance project slated to begin April 17.
Trains operating on the Electric District between 9:20 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. Monday through Saturday may experience delays of up to five minutes enroute due to the need for trains to operate at reduced speeds while passing through the construction zone. Construction schedules will go into effect on the line on Thursday, April 17 and remain in effect through June 14. The schedules are attached to this press release and are also available online.
Metra work forces will replace 10,000 railroad ties from 11th Place to 75th Street and resurface 14 miles of track during the project. The project will also result in the renewal of a total of 15 rail crossings on the line’s South Chicago and Blue Island branches. Additionally, the project will replace a total 3,000 ties in the Electric District yards at Richton Park and 18th St.
“This project is the type of work necessary to keep our rail lines and yards in a state of good repair,” said Metra CEO Don Orseno. “While no one enjoys passing through a construction zone, riders will ultimately enjoy the benefits of a smoother ride and more reliable service.”
