Daniel J. Smith, P.E., has joined Atkins’ transit and rail practice as a vice president and senior group manager. In his new role, Smith will oversee business development and program delivery for Atkins’ transit and rail business throughout the eastern U.S.
Smith has 25 years’ experience in the developing transit and aviation projects, with extensive global expertise in program and project management, engineering, manufacturing, design-build-bid, design-build, design-build-operate-maintain, public-private partnerships, and construction management.

His proven success in delivering ‘mega’ projects will help our North American practice provide the kind of success we’re known for by clients the world over.”
Before joining Atkins, Smith served as a vice president of rail and Transit for CH2M HILL in Miami.
He has successfully led billion-dollar programs and projects, including Toronto’s $9.6 billion Metrolinx transit program and the $2.3 billion Tren Urbano Heavy Rail Rapid Transit program of the Puerto Rico Highways and Transportation Authority — the first rapid transit program in the Caribbean region. With an extensive background in construction, rail systems, and rolling stock engineering, Smith is able to holistically help clients gain added value from their large transit and rail projects.
Smith earned his MBA degree from Golden Gate University after earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the former Sir George Williams University.
Smith is a licensed professional engineer in New York, Florida, and the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.
