NY: Subway Line Extension Named NYS Society of Professional Engineers' 2013 Construction Project of the Year

The New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) has selected the No. 7 Subway Line Extension as its 2013 Construction Project of the Year.

The $2.4 billion project is extending the New York City No. 7 Line Subway 1.5 miles from its current terminus at Times Square to a new terminal station at West 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue, on Manhattan’s far west side. It is being carried out by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) for New York City and is a key part of an initiative to transform the far west side of Midtown Manhattan into a vibrant, transit-oriented mixed-use district. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2014.

Parsons Brinckerhoff is the permanent works designer of the No. 7 Line Extension, providing final design services to the MTA, including all geotechnical, civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and communications elements; preparation of all contract documents; and design support during construction. Prior to construction, the firm had prepared alternative alignment studies, conceptual designs and an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the No. 7 Line Extension and Hudson Yards redevelopment. The EIS is believed to be the most extensive ever prepared for a project in New York City.
