A fire broke out early Tuesday morning at Penn Station in New York City, the second fire in two days at a major northeast transit hub. On Monday, 1 person died and hundreds were evacuated from L'Enfant Plaza station, one of the busiest on the Washington, D.C., Metro line.

The fire in New York broke out at about 2:30 a.m., and by 4 a.m. heavy smoke was billowing into the street, forcing an evacuation of both the station and a residential building across the street.
