KALAMAZOO, Mich. - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says Michigan, Illinois and Indiana are contributing $200,000 each to a $4 million study of creating a high-speed rail corridor between Chicago and Detroit.
Norfolk Southern also is giving $200,000, while the Federal Railroad Administration gives $3.2 million. LaHood says the study seeks ways to cut Amtrak passenger train times between the cities and to more efficiently move freight through the busy freight rail system between Chicago and Porter, Ind. The Department of Transportation says a goal is reducing congestion by linking a double track passenger main to the 110 mph service at Porter. It says the study will build on progress Michigan has made in achieving 110 mph service from Kalamazoo to Porter. AP
