Leading Midland employer Alstom has been awarded a pounds 42 million contract by Porterbrook to increase the capacity of London commuter fleets.
Porterbrook, one of the UK's three major rolling stock leasing companies, has selected the engineering firm to create a fleet of 36 five-car suburban trains to run on South West Trains routes.
The new fleet will enable around 8,000 extra peaktime passengers to travel into London's Waterloo station every morning, as eight-car trains will be lengthened to run in ten-car formation on certain routes.
A global leader in rail transport, power generation and power transmission, Alstom UK today employs more than 5,000 people in the Midlands region.
Alstom Transport employs 2,000 people in the UK, with its headquarters located in Rugby.
