Two men were struck and killed by a suburban Metra train here late Monday, local media said Tuesday.

Metra officials and Chicago police said the train struck the men around 11:50 pm Monday, just to the east of Cicero station in the city's west, and it remained unclear what they were doing on the tracks.

Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said a 30-year-old man was confirmed dead on the scene and a 53-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead there at 3:02 am.

The collision occurred on the tracks rather than at a crossing, and the police hadn't found a possible third victim, Gaines said.

The train was stopped at the scene for at least an hour and eventually canceled, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

Metra serves Chicago and its metropolitan area through 240 stations on 11 lines, and carried 81.4 million passengers in 2010.
