Railway police fired several rounds in the air as a mob ransacked the Tilbhitha railway station in Pakur district of Jharkhand after a woman was run over and killed by a goods train today, a senior police officer said today.
A large number of villagers assembled at the spot soon after the woman was mowed down by the train during shunting and ransacked the station.
This prompted the railway police to fire few rounds in the air to disperse the mob, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinesh Rajak said.
As the mob then resorted to brick-batting, a large district police force, led by Rajak, rushed to the spot and pacified the mob.
Railway sources said the Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vananchal Express was regulated at adjoining Sahebgunj while the Howrah-Rajgir Express was controlled at Rajgram station in adjoining West Bengal with train services on the Howrah division route, under Eastern Railway, disrupted for three hours.
