April 28, 2021
The railroad will utilize an online only application process and is looking to fill these positions by the fall.

The Chicago area’s regional rail provider is hanging its “help wanted” sign as it prepares for riders to return in more significant numbers.

More than 100 open positions for a variety of occupations at Metra will be posted starting May 3. Metra explains hiring will occur between the spring and fall and is to prepare for an increase in ridership, as well as to fill positions left vacant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The positions Metra is looking to fill include extra list clerks, assistant signalmen, assistant building and bridge mechanics, trackmen, substation electricians, electrician apprentices, carmen, coach cleaners and many others.

A video for each of those positions, featuring current job holders explaining the duties, is posted on Metra’s website. Each job posting will have more detailed job descriptions, information about pay and benefits and details about deadlines for applying.

“We want to make sure we are properly staffed to meet the needs of our riders as more and more of them begin returning to our trains,” said Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski. “Metra is always looking for talented people who thrive in a challenging and fast-paced industry. Our most important resource is a committed and diverse team that brings together a wealth of knowledge, skill and experience.”

Metra will only accept applications for positions through its careers page and urges interested applicants to not submit more than one application for a single job.

Metra is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Its policy is to fill vacant positions with qualified candidates without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, gender identity, disability or any protected categories, assuming an individual can perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation.
