WI: Madison Considers Introducing a Wheel Tax

Aug. 8, 2018
The Madison Common Council's Executive Committee voted 4-2 against a proposal for a $17 wheel tax on all cars registered in the City.

The Madison Common Council's Executive Committee voted 4-2 against a proposal for a $17 wheel tax on all cars registered in the City.

The proposal from the City's Department of Transportation comes after Dane County implemented a $28 wheel tax last year. If Madison were to pass the additional tax, car owners would pay $120 annual to register a vehicle.

City Alder Dave Ahrens is a member of the Executive Committee and voted against the wheel tax. He said though Madison's roads and transit system need funding and attention, the revenue from this tax wouldn't improve those areas.
