Executive director search has begun for MTA and ABAG

Oct. 28, 2022
MTC and ABAG have selected CPS HR Consulting to assist in the search following Therese McMillan's announcement in September that she would be retiring at the end of January 2023.

Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) began a nationwide recruitment effort to select the agencies’ next executive director. Current MTC and ABAG Executive Director Therese W. McMillan notified the commission and the ABAG Executive Board in September of her intention to retire from both positions on January 31, 2023.

MTC and ABAG selected Sacramento-based CPS HR Consulting, which specializes in executive search and other personnel services for government agencies, to manage the recruitment process. MTC and ABAG expect the next executive director to be an exceptional and innovative leader with an unflappable presence and the ability to meet the Bay Area’s challenges both strategically and tactically. Given the issues facing the region, the next executive director must possess a strong understanding of transportation funding and project delivery; familiarity with regional transportation and land use planning principles associated with demographics, air quality, affordable and market rate housing and housing demand, and natural resource protection; and knowledge of the diverse issues facing urban, suburban and rural areas.

Candidates deemed to have the most relevant qualifications will be invited to interview with the consultant. Following consultant interviews, the most qualified candidates will be referred for interviews with the MTC Selection Committee. CPS prepared a brochure with more information about MTC and ABAG as well as a more comprehensive description of the qualifications the ideal will present.
